A study of Harvard’s MBA students found that only “3% had clear, written goals and plans to accomplish them.” Ten years later those three percent “were earning, on average, ten times as much as the other 97 percent put together.”
I have learned that there are many people with big dreams and ideas about what they want to do but very few people have written goals and a plan to make their dreams reality. Here are 3 keys to accomplishing your goals:
1 - Write down your goals. The study I mentioned above shows the value in that. So why is this so vital? If you don’t write down your goals they will just be ideas, ideas that may or may not happen based on circumstance or luck or how you feel from one day to the next. But, if you write them down and make a plan you can see your progress and celebrate your victories. It’s all about being intentional. I know that I don’t want my circumstances and feelings getting in the way of me living my dream and making an impact in this world. Do you?
2 - Look at your goals regularly. It’s all well and good to write something down but if you put it in a drawer and never look at it again will it change anything? No. We must keep the end in mind. Whenever you go anywhere you fix your eyes on your destination. How do you expect to get where you are going if you aren’t looking that way?
3 - Get some accountability. Dr. Gail Matthews did a study on goal setting and found that “people who wrote down their goals, shared this information with a friend, and sent weekly updates to that friend were on average 33% more successful in accomplishing their stated goals than those who merely formulated goals.” It isn’t always easy and we aren’t always motivated to do the things we need to do to get to where we want to go. If you have someone who is in it with you, someone that you have to report to, someone that will remind you that the hard work will be worth it, you will push yourself just a little harder. I mean who wants to have a phone call once a week where you have to say, “No, I didn’t do anything to move toward my dream this week.”? Yeah, I didn’t think so.
